Belton firefighters say city is neglecting department

Members of the department took to social media and asked for the public's support. They said they need more people in their department to keep the city safe.

BELTON, Texas — The Belton Professional Firefighters organization said Tuesday that the city is neglecting its own fire department.

Members of the department took to social media and asked for the public's support. They said they need more people in their department to keep the city safe.

Belton Professional Firefighters said lack of equipment has been a problem for some time, but they hope it comes to an end Tuesday.

The association is asking for pay increases, improved benefits and additional staff. They’ve made several Facebook posts asking the community to rally for them at a city council meeting.

The firefighters are not just asking for more staff to join their ranks, they want the city to hire firefighters with experience.

The organization is also asking for budget cuts for other non-safety related areas to avoid increasing tax rates in Belton.

The city responded on its website by listing several changes made to the department in the past few years, including a 2.7 percent budget increase for the department.
