Daryl Keith Peters to fill Claudia Brown's Justice of the Peace position

Brown was removed from the position on Feb. 13 after her ethics were called into question when she set a $4 billion bond and heard her son's case.

TEMPLE, Texas — Bell County Commissioners selected Daryl Keith Peters to replace Claudia Brown as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 4, Place 1. Peters will be sworn in on March 25.

Brown is a Democrat and was elected in 2016 and removed from the bench in February, in part, for setting a $4 billion bond in 2017. She was the first public official to be removed from office in Bell County in 33 years.

On March 1, the county's Democratic party chair presented four candidates to the court to be considered.

Tuesday, commissioners unanimously chose Peters to fill the position to finish out Brown's term. The commissioners interviewed all four candidates Tuesday morning. The meeting at 4 p.m. to officially select Brown's replacement took less than 10 minutes.

The meeting to choose Brown's replacement was originally scheduled for March 12, but was delayed until Tuesday because County Judge David Blackburn was out sick.
