Dave Campbell signs 60th edition of 'Texas Football Magazine'

Campbell said when he first started the magazine in 1960, he thought he'd be lucky to create a second edition.

WACO, Texas — Dave Campbell signed copies of the 60th edition of his famous Texas Football Magazine at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco on Tuesday afternoon.

A week from now, the magazine will be available on store shelves statewide. The release of the magazine is the unofficial start to high school football season in Texas, and two-a-days are about seven weeks away.

Campbell started his magazine in 1960 on his kitchen table. The signing was originally scheduled for Saturday, but Campbell was sick and had to reschedule. Several fans and collectors from all around the state still made the trek to Waco to get their copy signed.

Originally, "Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine" didn't have the La Vega High School grad's name on the cover. That only lasted for a few years, and the 94 year old penned another letter from the editor-in-chief for the magazine's 2019 edition.

At the signing, Campbell reflected on the past 59 issues. He said he never imagined how big his magazine would get, and the role it would take in the Texas high school football landscape.

"I had no idea. Matter of fact, I was just wondering if we would survive to number two," he said. "And so to hear this is the 60th is amazing. But you know, there were just four of us who did it."

University of Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger graced this year's main cover. Meanwhile, the inside cover showcases one of the best high school games ever from 2018: the showdown between Galena Park North Shore and Duncanville.

Copies of the magazine will be available at Walmart and H-E-B locations next week.
