HILLSBORO, Texas — Family members of a Hillsboro shooting victim said they are relieved the case is one step closer to being solved.

The Hillsboro Department of Public Safety said 27-year-old Deonshira Slider was shot and killed in broad daylight in front of her 4-year-old son.

Family members said there is no arrest that can bring her back, but the pain is somewhat eased knowing that the person police think is responsible is sitting in jail.

On Monday, Hillsboro police arrested Edgar Barr-Lazcano. He is charged with murder and endangering a child, a Hillsboro DPS press release said.

Police said on Feb. 23, Slider was on her way to her mother’s house for breakfast when she was shot in her vehicle.

Slider’s family members said they believe her death stemmed from jealousy due to the person she was dating. They said it baffles them that Barr-Lazcano was walking the streets of Hillsboro this whole time.

They are glad he's in jail and will not be able to hurt anyone else, one of her cousins said.

"We have a lot of emotions going on right now,” Tomeka Womack said. “We are happy. We are glad. We are relieved that there has been a break in the case, and someone has been arrested. But at the same time, we still have a lot of mixed emotions because we know he wasn't the only one."

Slider's family said they do not know Barr-Lazcano.

Although Hillsboro police have made an arrest, the department said the investigation continues.

"We want the community to know that we are working on this case like we have been from the first day," Hillsboro DPS detective Jose Orozco said. "We will try to solve this case to the best of our ability."

Police said Barr-Lazcano is currently being held in the Hill County Jail on a $1 million bond.
