The family of a murdered Hilsboro woman is holding a benefit fundraiser for her mother and son. Deonshira "Deon" Slider died after she was shot on Feb. 23.
The Hillsboro Department of Public Safety said officers were dispatched to a disturbance in progress at 309 NW I-35 just before 9 a.m. While on their way, dispatchers notified officers of a second 911 call reporting gunshots had been fired.
When officers showed up, they found Slider wounded in her vehicle. First responders transported her to Hill Regional Hospital. She was later transferred to John Peter Smith Hospital, where she died of her injuries. Slider left behind a 4-year-old son who was in the car at the time of the shooting. Slider was planning to head to her mother’s house for breakfast before she was murdered.
The fundraiser will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on April 7 at Hillsboro Park.
"We've named the event Pink Day in the Park, because we know that Deon loved pink," said cousin Tomeka Womack.
There will be food, horseback rides, entertainment, and activities for the kids.
An account has been set up for Slider's son Ethan Brooks at the First Convenience Bank inside Walmart in Hillsboro.
The Hillsboro Crime Stoppers is offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who can provide information that directly leads to the arrest and conviction of the person who committed the murder.
