Funeral arrangements made for Fort Hood SSG killed after Lake Belton canoe accident

A funeral service with full military honors will be held Wednesday for Fort Hood SSG Kelton Ray Sphaler, who died after a canoe accident on Lake Belton.

Funeral plans for Fort Hood SSG Kelton Ray Sphaler, who died after a canoe accident on Lake Belton, have been set.

A funeral service with full military honors will be held 6 p.m. Wednesday at Chisolm's Family Funeral Home Chapel in Killeen, according to the funeral home's website.

Sphaler, 25, went on a fishing trip with two friends Monday. The three took two motorized canoes onto Lake Belton.

After the first canoe flipped, the other capsized during an attempt to save the first, according to Parks and Wildlife officials.

One of the friends was able to swim to shore after the accident, but Sphaler's body was recovered under 10 feet of water near the shore opposite Sparta Valley Park Tuesday.

The third man, Scott Weinhold, has been missing since the accident.

A private family interment for Sphaler will be held at a later date.
