The community of West mourned the loss of one of their high school football players after he died in a car accident Thursday evening.

Jacob Bates, an 18 year-old senior, crashed his truck into the back of a semi-truck on I-35 southbound.

According to DPS troopers, traffic was stalled in the southbound lanes from MM 342 to 345 for several hours for a hazmat spill.

No one else was injured, and DPS was still investigating the crash.

West ISD posted on their Facebook page that counselors would be on hand Friday for any students who needed to talk. All student activities for Friday were canceled.

David Truitt, West ISD Superintendent, posted this along with the notice about Friday events.

"Please keep Jacob’s family in your prayers. Also, please be thinking about the difficulty this news will have on his teammates, friends, classmates, other students, staff, parents, and community. It’s times like these that I feel so blessed to be in West. I know everyone will come together to support each other and most importantly… the kids."
