HOUSTON — A 15-year-old on a four-wheeler is in trouble after he led police on a chase that ended up on the Eastex Freeway.
According to the Humble Police Department, the teen was charged with felony evading and was taken to juvenile probation Friday.
Police said they received a call around 9:30 a.m. Thursday about someone riding an ATV on side streets in Humble, which is illegal.
Traffic Sgt. Jack Burt with Humble police said one of his officers spotted the teen near Humble High School. He said when the officer tried to pull the teen over, he fled.
“He stayed on the roadway quite a bit. We did lose him at one point where he hit the bayou. We were searching the area, then another agency located the four-wheeler again and the pursuit picked back up with another agency until we got back involved in the pursuit," Burt said.
He said once the teen entered the EastTex Freeway, Humble police stopped the pursuit. They were concerned because an ATV's max speed is between 40 to 50 mph and that speed is higher than the speed limit on I-69.
“What we did was, we stayed behind the vehicle but did it for safety reasons,” said Burt.
The teen exited FM 1314 and voluntarily surrendered and was taken into custody.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Public Safety, and deputies with Montgomery County Pct. 4 all helped with the pursuit at some point.
“Maybe he was taking a joy ride today and he made a bad decision today not to stop for police,” said Burt about the chase which lasted almost an hour.
On social media, a video surfaced of a teen recording himself while on a four-wheeler with police officers behind him. Humble police confirmed that was the person they arrested.
“He put himself in danger and a lot of other people in danger just to try to get him to pull over. I don’t recommend anyone running from the police, but especially on a four-wheeler,” Burt said.
