Hundreds march in Waco to honor Dr. MLK

Hundreds of people marched on the Suspension Bridge in Waco to honor the memory of the civil rights icon.

WACO, Texas — People around the country and the world paused Monday to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Central Texans joined in to honor and commemorate Dr. King's spirit and legacy of service.

Hundreds of people in Waco marched on the Suspension Bridge to honor the memory of the civil rights icon.

"It is so very important that our children know that there was a legacy who believes in everything they do as they come up as little children," said Rolanda Burns of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Children like Malik Lee learned at a very young age how Dr. King fought to secure racial equality and human rights for people around the world.

"I know, because of Dr. King, I’m not in the midst of having to drink at certain water fountains, and eat certain foods and not go to certain restaurants,” said Lee. “If it wasn’t’ for Dr. King, I may not be here right now, so I’m thankful for that."

Nearly 400 more people volunteered to help Keep Waco Beautiful and Waco Paddle Company clean up the Brazos River at their MLK day of service.

"It’s really important because we have a lot of people who come into town and just so our citizens can live in a clean environment," said Keep Waco Beautiful Director Ashley Millerd.

Some said it is also important to remember those who sacrificed themselves and served on the front lines to ensure that Dr. King's dream became a reality.

"This is a very important day for our country to remember what we have come through and how far we have to go and how grateful we are to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.," said Bill Cooper of Seventh of James Baptist Church in Waco.

Monday at 6 p.m., people will meet on the suspension bridge at Indian Springs Park for a candle light vigil to wrap up the MLK holiday.
