Killeen community works for economic opportunities, mentoring programs in wake of recent killings

Killeen community members are working for change in areas of their city.

Dozens met for the first 76541 Community Coalition Initiative meeting Monday to talk about multiple problems they are seeing.

The 76541 Community Coalition is a group in the making. They are looking to identify the needs in the community, create strategies, and advocate for social change.

During the meeting, the topics that were focused on were the need for economic opportunities, grocery sources, life centers, and mentoring programs.

They are also looking to tackle the high crime rate in the area. They talked about a few recent shootings involving teenagers.

"We're looking at the city of Killeen as a whole, but this was an area of focus for us because of the determinants that's happening in that particular area,” Lolita Gilmore said.

The group’s next meeting is on Dec. 9 at Anderson Chapel.
