Killeen parents begin enrolling children into Monarch Academy

A new private school opening in fall 2019 features etiquette classes, agriculture courses and multicultural studies to offer a more rounded education for its students.

KILLEEN, Texas — Parents can now enroll their kids into Monarch Academy, a new first through eighth grade school opening in Killeen in fall 2019.

The academy is a partnership between educators and community members. It will feature a wide variety of courses, like etiquette classes, agricultural science, music and art, finance courses and multicultural studies. This is in conjunction with the regular course load.

"Providing local kids with these additional skill sets will give them a step up in life and in planning their futures," school founder Billy Brown said.

The additional, specialized skill set persuaded Denise Creech to enroll her 7 year old son Jamarkus into the school.

"It's somewhere they can really look forward to coming everyday and learning life skills, something that unfortunately is not taught in all schools so I definitely wanted my son to be a part of that," said Creech.

While Jamarkus likes the different classroom layouts and is eager to start learning.

"All of the rooms look cool and I feel like I'm going to learn a lot of stuff. I will grow up learning how to do stuff really quick. I can learn how to probably plant, I can learn how to paint, I could even be an artist," said Jamarkus Creech.

The academy is private and requires tuition, but Brown said there are scholarship and financial aid opportunities available. Community members are also able to sponsor a child. The admissions process for the academy includes an interview.

"This is something that we're really passionate about, because we want to see the youth in our community succeed," Brown said.
