Killeen robbery suspect at center of Netflix special could face week in jail for traffic fines

While George Powell was in jail fighting to have his robbery conviction overturned, his traffic citation payments became delinquent and escalated to warrants.

Accused burglary suspect George Powell, whose conviction was vacated, may be facing jail time for an unrelated incident.

According to Powell’s fiancé, Tamara Parsons, he appeared at the municipal court in Harker Heights Monday for two traffic-related warrants. Parsons said Powell was set up on a payment plan to pay for the $800 in fines for the citations before he went to jail for robbery charges. While in jail fighting to have his robbery conviction overturned, his payments became delinquent and escalated to warrants, Parsons said. Powell was facing a week in jail over the warrants.

In court Monday, Powell requested that the 11 years he’d spent in prison count toward the week in jail for the fines. The judge was willing to accept time served as long as Powell could present paperwork within 30 days to prove he had been in prison, Parsons said.

Powell was convicted of robbing a Killeen 7-11 in 2008, but the conviction was vacated on June 26 due to prosecutorial misconduct.

After his court appearance Monday, Powell and his attorney plan to visit the Killeen 7-11 Powell is accused of robbing. 6 News reporter Emani Payne will be there and we will bring you developments as they become available.
