HOUSTON — The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office confirmed that an apartment fire during Thursday night's storm was sparked by lightning.
One couple said it happened really fast and they just had time to grab their two babies and her 10-year-old brother and get out.
"Everybody was panicking, it was coming to our side quick because the smoke was traveling fast," they said.
Eleven-year-old Ivan Hernandez was inside his family's home across the street when he heard a loud noise.
"The lightning struck the tree, which caused the tree to fall on the power line, and then it fell on top of the apartment and it just melted through," Ivan said. "I started to hear these weird sounds, like vroom, like someone was roaring. It was super terrifying."
One building with 12 units was destroyed, leaving several families homeless.
"Pretty much everything we got on, is what we own now. It's all we have," one of the displaced residents said. "We're just trying to figure out, like where we're going to go from here."
The Red Cross was there to help the families affected.
Thankfully, no one was hurt.
The Westmount at London Park apartment complex is on Bammel North Houston Road near FM 1960 in northwest Harris County.
The lightning came with Thursday’s severe storms that caused damage and more than 200,000 power outages across the Houston area.
