Lightning strike sparks Waco house fire

The Waco Fire Department responded to two fires Sunday night and early Monday morning.

WACO, Texas — The Waco Fire Department responded to a house fire Sunday night and a second one early Monday morning.

One of those fires was on the 3000 block of Green Oak Drive. The fire was caused by lightning, according to Battalion Chief John Johnston with the Waco Fire Department.

Homeowners said they were watching TV when they saw the lightning strike.

Johnston said they got a call just before 2 a.m. Monday. When they arrived they noticed smoke and flames coming out of the attic. It took firefighters about one hour to get the fire under control.

The attic of the home was damaged as well as two rooms in the home. Everyone made it out safely.

The other fire happened on Sunday around 8 p.m. during storms in Waco.

According to Robby Bergerson with the Waco Fire Department, they got a call of a house fire around 7:52 p.m.

The fire was contained to the attic and damaged that area of the home.

There were no injuries reported.

The cause of the second fire was determined to be electrical, but weather could have been a factor, officials said.
