FORT HOOD, Texas — Mohawk Drive on Fort Hood is closed for the next nine months, Fort Hood officials said.

The major road took a beating during repairs to the runaway at Killeen Fort Hood Regional Airport and Robert Gray Army Airfield in May 2018, Fort Hood officials said.

The construction made Mohawk Drive the worst road on the fort, and a 1.2 mile stretch of the 3 mile road will have to be completely torn up and rebuilt from the base, Fort Hood officials said.

The closure will affect nearly 5,000 Department of the Army civilians and soldiers who use Mohawk Drive on a daily basis, Fort Hood officials said.

Fort Hood is conducting a comprehensive study this week to see how the nine-month project is affecting traffic flow around the fort, and if Clarke Gate will be able to handle the additional workload.

Officials said they are considering opening up the closed down Old Copperas Cove Road gate to help with traffic, but that decision won't be made until next week.

The cost of the project is $1.6 million and will be fully funded with federal dollars.
