'No gun violence!' Baylor Freedom School students hold Waco march to raise awareness about gun control

The demonstration was part of National Day of Social Action.

WACO, Texas — More than a dozen kids were in downtown Waco Tuesday making a lot of noise.

As a part of the National Day of Social Action, students from Baylor Freedom School marched in front of the McLennan County Courthouse to raise awareness about gun control.

All eyes were on them during the demonstration as they carried posters they created related to the theme of "Gun Violence and Awareness."

Since the beginning of the summer, they have been a part of the Baylor Freedom School which is a summer literacy enrichment program that helpings student curve summer learning loss.
They also learn how to engage in civil service and participate in social service projects.

"I’m going against gun violence because every two hours and 34 minutes a child dies because of gun violence,” said Freedom School student Iryanna Goodman. “We really need to stop that because they are not getting a chance to go to college and peruse their dreams."

Students who marched said they felt empowered and as if their voices mattered. Students also celebrated the National Day of Social Action with a visit from the Waco Police Department.
