'Operation Holiday Uplift' feeds hundreds of Copperas Cove families

Operation Holiday Uplift brings meals to families the week of Thanksgiving and provides another meal for Christmas.

COPPERAS COVE, Texas — Bethesda Fellowship Ministries partnered with Copperas Cove police and local students Monday for Operation Holiday Uplift.

The operation has two phases. They first bring meals to families the week of Thanksgiving and provides another meal for Christmas.

When it started, 11 years ago, the church provided less than 50 meals, now they are up to 600 meals between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The church packed a turkey into each meal box Monday morning and loaded all the boxes into a U-Haul. At noon, the Copperas Cove Police Department led a caravan of vehicles across the city to more than five different locations in local neighborhoods.

Multiple teams unpacked the meals at each site and delivered them to different homes. Volunteers often delivered to an entire block in under fifteen minutes. Pastor Ray Gatewood told KCEN Channel 6 that it was important to respect the people in the area and to show that the church cares about them as well.

“These are very proud people who live in these areas, but they may not have what everyone else has," Gatewood said. "During this time we just try to give them a leg up.”
