KYLE, Texas — A 19-year-old is dead after police in Kyle responded to several fentanyl poisonings over the weekend.
According to Kyle police, officers were called to three fentanyl poisonings at the same time and location on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Two victims, an 18- and 19-year-old, survived the fentanyl poisonings. Police have not identified the 19-year-old who died.
Police said two people were given Narcan – the deceased and one survivor.
Over the past two years, the department has been pushing its fentanyl awareness campaign, and police data shows it's helping. The department's spokesperson, Ashlee Bradshaw, said in 2022, they saw 25 fentanyl-related incidents. In 2023, the number dropped to 12, and as of Oct. 9, 2024, they've seen five, which does not include the three recent incidents.
Police say the case remains under investigation at this time. They urge parents to reiterate the importance of fentanyl awareness and education.
"While our public safety measures and fentanyl awareness campaigns have effectively reduced fentanyl-related incidents in our area, we must remain vigilant in our efforts to eliminate this threat from our community," the police department said in a statement.
Fentanyl can be laced in many illegal drugs, and in Kyle, police are seeing the powerful drug in pills that look similar to blue 30mg oxycodone and are typically called Percocet.
Anyone with information on the poisonings should contact Kyle police at 512-268-3232 or submit a tip anonymously through Hays County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-324-TIPS.
