Residents evacuated from Northside of Killeen after HAZMAT call

Northside Killeen residents were evacuated following a HAZMAT incident.

About 50 residents in Northside Killeen were evacuated Saturday following a HAZMAT incident.

Luckily, they were never in any real danger.

Officers responded to a narcotics call in the area of Poage Ave. and detected a strong odor they believed to be acetone, which is used to wash meth. Officers closed several roads in the area and notified the fire department and HAZMAT team.

Investigation determined the source of the smell was actually a ruptured fuel tank on a vehicle containing old fuel. Environmental Services and drainage maintenance were notified.

Evacuees were allowed to return to their homes and road closures were reopened a few hours after the original call was placed.
