Rodeo in ‘early stages’ of plans for former AstroWorld land

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo owns nearly 102 acres of the land where Six Flags AstroWorld shuttered in 2005.

With hip-hop artist Travis Scott’s new album and music festival bringing AstroWorld back into the national spotlight, many nostalgic Houstonians likely are curious about what’s to become of the former theme park’s land.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo owns nearly 102 acres of the land where Six Flags AstroWorld shuttered in 2005.

The land has been used for additional parking for the annual Rodeo Houston event held at NRG Park in March.

Now, HLSR is looking for other ways to use it.

"We are in the early stages of our long-range planning for the 102 acres at 610 lot. Currently, the location is providing additional parking for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and, as part of the long-range plan, we are discussing how the space can contribute to our mission of agriculture," Rodeo President and CEO Joel Cowley said. "All plans are entirely conceptual at this point, but discussions have included building an event space that would enhance our annual Show and provide a year-round presence that could serve multiple purposes including educational exhibits, committee meeting space, fundraiser and event locations."

The rodeo began acquiring the land in late 2012 and now owns five tracts adjacent to Davis Chevrolet and the 610 Loop, according to Harris County Appraisal District records.
