Salvation Army, Shepherd's Heart have food pantry day for low-income seniors

The two organizations will deliver groceries to seniors living at William and Catherine Booth Garden Apartments.

WACO, Texas — The Salvation Army and Shepherd's Heart Food Pantry are having their monthly food pantry day serving low income seniors living at William and Catherine Booth Garden Apartments on Thursday, April 16.

The two organizations have hosted the monthly event to serve those living at the apartment complex but were not able to do so last month, due to the pandemic. Before that, however, the partnership to provide groceries for seniors has been going for five years and has brought groceries to about 80 low-income residents of the complex.

"We've even put some toilet paper and some disinfectant wipes and things they might need because of this virus we are dealing with," said Major Jim Taylor of the Waco-McLennan County Salvation Army.

For this month's delivery, the partner organizations have modified their delivery methods to follow health and safety guidelines put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

"It's just a way for us to continue to serve these people in our building, yet keeping them as safe as we possibly can," said Taylor.

This month, groceries will arrive pre-packaged from Shepherd's Heart at 9:30 a.m. and the Salvation Army will add toilet paper and instructions on how to properly handle incoming groceries (cleaning, disinfecting, etc.). Staff will deliver boxes to apartments along with home-health agency Girling Community Care.

"Whether they are homeless individuals or indigent, or maybe they just lost their job because of the pandemic, this is what we do," said Taylor.
