Summer camp showcases young artists' talent in Killeen

Some creative students in Killeen took part in a young artist summer camp to help them achieve their dreams.

KILLEEN, Texas — Young artists in Killeen will showcase their talents this Friday as they perform what they learned during a week-long creativity camp.

All week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. camp director Toni Ringgold and a handful of volunteers met at Kids' University in Killeen to teach music, performance and art skills that would help kids with a passion for the creative field succeed in the future.

"We have all different kind of kids who love things like sports, and there are so many things open to them," Ringgold said. "But what about our kids who are creative, our kids who love to sing and write?"

Children ages 8 to 18 with interests in performing arts and photography attended the camp.

"Everyday that I walk through the doors of this camp I feel free," Alexa Silcott, who attended the camp, said. "I'm able to do as I please."

Students started every day with a guest speaker before heading to classrooms to learn about acting, singing, dancing, photography, creative writing and audio production.

Students will showcase what they learned to the community Friday at 7 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.
