Temple police summer camp begins with dog training program for kids

There are about 50 students registered for each session and kids get a chance to learn about law enforcement and safety all while having fun.

TEMPLE, Texas — The Temple Police Department is hosting a four week long summer camp for students where they get a chance to learn about law enforcement and safety, all while having fun.

On the first day, Temple police had representatives from 'Sit Means Sit' Dog Training to teach kids how to act if they encounter a stray dog or how to approach a dog on a leash.

Sgt. Brad Bennett with the Temple Police Department has been part of the summer camp for three years and he said the feedback from parents and kids is great.

"The main goal of this camp is the positive interaction among all the school resource officers with the kids in non police setting," Sgt. Bennett said. "We're here just to have fun and let the kids learn a few things."

Students who attended the first session at Lake Belton Middle School got to pet a 6-year-old dog named Turbo after their dog training lesson.

Some students like Chason Heisterberg, a fourth grader and Kiera Drey, a fifth grader recommend the summer camp to others.

"You'll really learn a lot of new things and have a lot more friends it's a lot fun and you're gonna hang out with more people," Drey said.

"It'd be a really great experience and I don't wanna give them any spoilers, but it's a really fun experience and I think they should try it out," Heisterberg said.

If you didn't get a chance to sign up your child this year, the Temple Police Department will have more next year.
