With gas prices rising, what gas rumors are myth?

With the cost of oil, and therefore gas, continuing to rise, how can we get more bang for our buck when it's time to fill up?

Rising costs at the pump will hit all of us in the pocketbook.

With the cost of oil, and therefore gas, continuing to rise, how can we get more bang for our buck when it's time to fill up?

Do you get better gas mileage with your windows up?

James Smith, an owner at Smith Family's Auto Care in Temple said today's technology, including the aerodynamics of car designs, reduces the amount of drag you might experience to almost none.

"None where it's really going to make a difference," Smith said.

That claim is false.

Does turning off the A/C increase gas mileage?

Smith said this is similar to the windows myth. He said car manufacturing has improved, making the A/C run efficiently and not forcing anyone to turn it off.

"The A/C doesn't make a difference on the newer model cars, no," Smith said. "It doesn't make a difference with the A/C, as far as fuel efficiency, as without."

However, he said in older model cars dating back to the 1980's, both the windows being down and the A/C being on could cost on fuel efficiency. However, for most vehicles on the road, this claim is false.

Do capsules and additives claiming to increase gas mileage actually work?

Smith said these additives don't add to gas mileage. In addition, users often use too much, too often. When that happens, Smith said those few dollars for the additives can turn into large repair bills.

"Because of overuse or not knowing actually how much to use, people can do more harm than good," Smith said.

That claim is false.

Are gas prices cheaper depending on the day of the week?

For this question, we spoke with AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster.

He said in Texas the price of gas is determined by the seller.

"Retail gas stations set the prices in Texas individually," Armbruster said. "And those prices can change at any moment for a variety of factors."

So, on a broad scale, this claim is likely false.
