State Rep. Hugh Shine wins Republican primary in District 55

Incumbent Hugh Shine wins his second Republican primary.

BELL COUNTY -- Texas State Representative Hugh Shine won the Republican primary in District 55 on Tuesday, defeating GOP challengers C.J. Grisham and Brandon Hall.

The unofficial results posted by Bell County showed Shine with more than 60-percent of the vote.

No Democrats entered the race, meaning Shine, a retired military Colonel, is expected to officially clinch a second term during the general election on Nov. 6.

Shine, 65, raised more than double the money of both Grisham and Hall combined – receiving more than $250,000 in contributions. His financial advantage was evidenced by his recent campaign ad spending, which blanketed Central Texas with commercials leading up to the primary.

Hall and Grisham characterized Shine as being too liberal, but his endorsements by the National Rifle Association and the Texas Alliance for Life served as evidence to the contrary to his supporters. Grisham boasted endorsements from Texans for Fiscal Responsibility and gun rights groups.

All three candidates campaigned for heightened border security and tax reform.
