Baylor senior LB Clay Johnston (4) chases Kansas State QB Skylar Thompson during a Big 12 Conference game on Oct. 5, 2019, in Manhattan, Kansas. The Bears won the game 31-12, moving to 5-0.

WACO, Texas — Baylor will be without one of its key defensive players for its remaining seven games in 2019.

Senior linebacker Clay Johnston will miss the remainder of the 2019 season with an undisclosed knee injury, a team spokesperson confirmed Sunday to 6 News sports director Nick Canizales.

Johnston suffered the injury in the 22nd-ranked Bears double-overtime win over Texas Tech on Saturday.

Johnston leads Baylor defenders in tackles by a wide margin, with 58 through six games. The next closest is Terrel Bernard with 30.

Ahead of the 2019 season, his teammates voted for Johnston to wear a single-digit jersey (No. 4) his senior year, as one of the Bears' toughest players and biggest leaders.

A native of Abilene, Texas, Johnston has totaled 237 tackles in 39 career games at Baylor, after redshirting as a freshman in 2015. He made a career-high 13 tackles against Iowa State on Sept. 28th.

Freshman Matt Jones was listed as Johnston's backup ahead of the Texas Tech game. Jones totaled four tackles in Baylor's wins over Stephen F. Austin and UTSA to start the season.

The Bears will next face Oklahoma State at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. Saturday.
