Five McLennan Community College student-athletes, including two basketball players, two golfers, and a baseball player, signed National Letters of Intent this afternoon in a Signing Ceremony at The Highlands.
Sophomores Xavier Armstead and Jordan Skipper-Brown signed from the men’s basketball squad. Armstead, a Waco native and Midway High School graduate, signed with Louisiana Tech University. As a freshman, Armstead appeared in all 32 of the Highlanders’ games, averaging 15.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game to earn NTJCAC Newcomer of the Year, first-team all-conference selection, and all-region honors. He currently leads the Highlanders with a 17.9 points per game average through seven games. Skipper-Brown, from Olympia, Washington, signed with Eastern Illinois University. He also appeared in all 32 games as a freshman, averaging 6.8 points and 3.5 rebounds. His 17.7 points per game average is currently second highest on the Highlander squad through the first seven games.
Highlander golf sophomores Mathias Lorentzen and Trent Leffingwell signed with the University of South Alabama and the University of the Incarnate Word, respectively. Lorentzen, from Hvidovre, Denmark, competed in nine tournaments as a freshman, claiming eight top-10 finishes including a tie for fifth place at the NJCAA Division I National Championship to earn first-team All-American honors. He competed in three tournaments for the Highlanders this fall, claiming the individual title at the Dr Pepper Classic. Leffingwell, a New Braunfels native, competed in four tournaments as a freshman and was an NJCAA All-Academic Student Athlete Award second-team honoree. He also competed in three tournaments for the Highlanders this fall.
Left-handed pitcher Grant Miller from the Highlander baseball squad signed with Texas Christian University. Miller recorded a 9-1 record with a save in 17 appearances on the mound with a 1.92 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 65.2 innings as a freshman last season. He earned NTJCAC Co-Pitcher of the Year and was a first-team all-conference and all-region selection. He was named a NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American and was a NJCAA All-Academic Student-Athlete Award second-team honoree.
