Midway soccer coach battles cancer with community behind him

Midway Boy's Varsity Soccer Coach Patrick Posey is battling cancer with the support of the Panther community.

The classrooms and soccer fields at Waco's Midway High School stand empty for summer break. Inside, the building, desks and chairs can be seen in the halls -- as staff squeeze in a school year's worth of cleaning.

Midway Boy's Varsity Soccer Coach Patrick Posey sits on a couch at his home in Woodway Tuesday, watching the Aggies play the Horned Frogs on television. While the players fight elimination in Omaha, Coach Posey is fighting for his life.

In May 2017, doctors discovered a mass on his brain that was eventually determined to be a tumor. He was diagnosed with level four glioblastoma, a cancer that originates in the brain. He received no prognosis, but Posey said that was because he did not ask for one.

Posey's first thought was his family. He has three daughters.

"Emily, our middle child, is special needs. So, she doesn't understand. She just kept asking me, 'are you going to school today? Are you going to school today?' And, I couldn't go to school for three weeks," Posey said.

His wife Susan, who he met in college at Texas A&M, was left in shock.

"This can't be happening to my husband," Susan said.

For the Poseys, cancer is a story of love, God, family and community.

"Initially, when we were in the hospital, a former booster, a parent from the soccer team came up to me and said, ‘I want to do something for Patrick and it’s going to be big.’ And I said, ‘ok, whatever you want to do.’ Within a week or two she called and said, we’re going to do a 5k," Susan explained.

Surrounded by the support of his community, Posey kept repeating one phrase: "Midway is home."

“I’ve told everybody the glass is always half-full. It’s not half-empty. The glass is half-full," Posey said. "Yes, we are going to fight this. We’re going to do everything that we possibly can to beat this thing.”

The halls of Midway High School are empty. But, thanks to the Panther Community, the Posey family's hearts are full.
