Mental Health Awareness month: resources available in CTX

A pandemic is a major trigger for a lot of people. Not only do they fear contracting COVID-19, but there are underlying effects like anxiety, depression, and stress.

As the state of Texas re-opens, many people are coming out of isolation. It may be easier for some to get their mental health back on the right track, but others will continue to deal with the ramifications for COVID-19.

Dr. Ray Helmcamp, executive director of Central Counties Services said a pandemic is a major trigger for a lot of people. Not only do they fear contracting COVID-19, but there are underlying effects like anxiety, depression, and stress.

"In society itself there's a lot of high anxiety, but when you add this variable to it, it is pretty monstrous,” Dr. Helmcamp said.

Central Counties Services is for people with three major illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. It serves five different counties, including Bell, Coryell, Hamilton, Lampasas, and Milam. Now, they have extended their services and are taking calls from people whose mental health has been affected by COVID-19.

"We're a main stay in the community. We've been here over 50 years and whatever we can do to help the community at large get through this crisis we will do,” Dr. Helmcamp said.

Calls have increased across Texas. A state-wide mental health support line was put in place for anyone who needs assistance.

Dr. Helmcamp said it’s also important to keep engagement with the community as much as possible.

"Whatever network they had before whether it be their neighbors, their church, their school, their friends, check in and make calls to see how they're doing,” Dr. Helmcamp said.

Everyone copes in a different way and it’s ok to feel anxiety, fear, and stress during a time like this. However, it’s important to talk to someone and take advantage of the services available in your community.

If you or anyone you know is struggling with their mental health you can call the Texas Health and Human Services COVID-19 Mental Health Support Line: 833-986-1919.
