KILLEEN, Texas — The City of Killeen announced that an early morning fire left 14 people without a home and several dogs with smoke inhalation on Friday, March 22.

According to the City, firefighters were called to put out a fire in the 3300 block of Toledo Drive at about 5:34 a.m. Three minutes after receiving the call reporting heavy smoke coming from the front door of a second floor unit, the Killeen Fire Department arrived.

The City says a resident told firefighters the fire was coming from the refrigerator.

Firefighters began evacuating 10 residents inside adjacent units. Once everyone was evacuated, firefighters located one adult dog and 10 puppies, all suffering from smoke inhalation.

According to the City, firefighters were able to resuscitate three of the young puppies and they were taken to an emergency veterinarian for treatment.

The City says no injuries were reported. However, all four units were declared uninhabitable, leaving 14 people without a home.

Fire crews determined the fire was accidental as it started from a large appliance.
