Temple PD holds golf tournament to get Operation Blue Santa donations

The tournament raised about $8,000-- enough to potentially double the number of kids who benefit from Operation Blue Santa.

TEMPLE, Texas — The Temple Police Department held its inaugural fundraising golf tournament for Operation Blue Santa Saturday.

The tournament was held at Sammons Park Golf Course and raised about $8,000. Those donations could double the number of kids who benefit from the program.

"That $8,000 will help us reach about 400 kids," Cpl. Joe Dimento said.

Dimento said the department wanted the community to be part of the fundraising effort.

"Instead of just going out and asking for money we just wanted to get the community involved and do something fun," Cpl. Joe Dimento said. "That's where we came up with the idea for the golf tournament."

The tournament drew 20 four-golfer teams and included a raffle.

The department wasn't surprised by the turnout.

"It's what everyone expects," Temple Police chief Floyd Mitchell said. "The Temple community and the Central Texas community always comes out and supports everyone within the community."

For those who missed the tournament but want to help, the department recommended reaching out to its Facebook page.
