Girl Scouts of Central Texas to unveil newly renamed Bluebonnet Shores Girl Scout Camp

Girl Scouts and community members were encouraged to submit suggestions for the new name of the camp, formerly known as Camp Kachina.

BELTON, Texas — Girl Scouts of Central Texas will soon unveil the newly renamed Bluebonnet Shores Girl Scout Camp in Belton.

The organization will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly re-christened camp from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, inviting the community to come celebrate the occasion.

The camp, formerly known as Camp Kachina, is located at 14750 Camp Kachina Rd. in Belton, Texas.

Girl Scouts of Central Texas said they began a review of Camp Kachina's name in 2021, in response to concerns about the name being "culturally inappropriate and contextually irrelevant". After the organization decided a name change was warranted, Girl Scouts and members of the community were invited to suggest new names for the camp.

The organization said 33% of suggestions for the new name featured the word "bluebonnet", paying homage to both the Texas state flower and the original Bluebonnet Girl Scout Council that founded the camp.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will reportedly be held at the campsite on the shores of Lake Belton, with representatives from the City of Morgan's Point Resort, Killeen, Cliffs at Lake Belton and Bell County in attendance. Former Girl Scouts of Central Texas board members will also reportedly attend.

The ceremony will be followed by an open house where visitors can explore the campgrounds, learn about programs and "experience the beauty of Bluebonnet Shores firsthand", said Girl Scouts of Central Texas. Light refreshments will also reportedly be served.

"Bluebonnet Shores Girl Scout Camp represents not just a place of outdoor adventure, but a commitment to inclusivity, respect and honoring our heritage," said Girl Scouts of Central Texas CEO Paula Bookidis. "We are excited to begin this new chapter and look forward to welcoming Girl Scouts and the broader community to Bluebonnet Shores for years to come."
