Team Luke raising money to support families of those with special needs in Central Texas

The organization aims to support families left to care for their loved ones with financial and emotional support as part of a continuum of care.

WACO, Texas — The Team Luke Hope For Minds organization is working together to help families, not only across Central Texas, but across the country, with support connecting them with education and services either partially or not covered by insurance.

"Some help for immediate basic needs, some of the latest therapies, helping them financially because often time insurance is not going to cover all of the expenses that comes with brain injury recovery," said Team Luke Director of Marketing and Communications Jennifer Marshall-Higgins.

Marshall-Higgins says the organization aims to support a child's, impaired adult and family's ability to thrive.

Things such as referrals for medical care and physical therapy that Tanner Underwood and his mother Carrol have taken advantage of, following a traumatic brain injury to the 25 year old.

"You enter into a new world of finding a new normal," said Carrol Underwood.  "They've got great support groups with [Team Luke] where it's just a lot of therapeutic counseling and learning how to accept and move forward."

The organization also hosts a yearly conference to bring together the families, seemingly at a crossroad in life, caring for a loved one. Something Underwood called "inspiring."

"I was just amazed by all the people they were able to help, far more than they've helped me," Underwood said. "In comparison, there are just far more families that have it much worse off than we do."

Team Luke Hope for Minds is hosting a fundraiser for families and patients this Brain Injury Awareness Month and encourages anyone with the means to donate to their cause.
