Fun and practical Japanese store Daiso stocks up new South Austin location

A grand opening event will hook some shoppers up with goodie bags.

AUSTIN, Texas — (CultureMap Austin) So your co-worker got a promotion and you wanted to give them a silly little gift. Or your girlfriend had a bad day. Or you had a bad day and $4 to burn. Thankfully, there's Daiso. The Japanese retail store specializing in affordable knickknacks and home goods is opening a new store in Austin on April 6.

The new store will be located at Sunset Valley Marketfair (5400 Brodie Ln. Ste. 990) near Spec's, Target, the Home Depot, and the Violet Crown Trailhead at Highway 290. It joins two other Austin-area stores: one on Airport Boulevard in North Austin, and one in Round Rock.

On opening weekend — April 6 and 7 — the first 100 customers to make a minimum purchase of $30 at the new location will receive a free goodie bag and a plushie.

"We are thrilled to open our store at Sunset Valley Marketfair," said Chief Retail Operations Officer for Daiso USA Jack Williams in a press release. "This achievement reflects the dedication and support of our customers who have embraced Daiso's unique concept and diverse product range. We are excited to provide an exceptional shopping experience to the vibrant Austin community and look forward to serving our customers with the utmost care and dedication."

"Diverse" is an accurate assessment of the product range, which includes everything from art supplies, to snacks, to stuffed animals, to home organization tools across 10,000 square feet of retail space. Shoppers can compare this to the Danish brand Flying Tiger, or any number of U.S.-based dollar stores, although the international chains tend to be much more organized.
