Harker Heights lifts Stage 4 water restrictions, returns to Stage 2

The Bell County Water Control and Improvement District #1 lifted Stage 4 water restrictions after repairing a water line that was damaged on April 1.

HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas — The City of Harker Heights has lifted Stage 4 water restrictions and will return to Stage 2 mandatory conservation, according to an announcement by the City.

Stage 4 restrictions were implemented on April 1 by the Bell County Water Control and Improvement District (WCID) #1 due to a leak in a water line that affected water service for many in Bell County.

Water restrictions in Harker Heights have not been completely lifted, however, as the City said it will return to Stage 2-mandatory conservation drought response.

According to the City, the goal of Stage 2 is to achieve a 10% reduction in water use by "raising public and customer awareness of water demand conditions".

Lake Belton, from which Harker Heights receives its treated drinking water, dropped below the Stage 2 warning trigger on July 31, 2023, according to the City.

The City of Harker Heights said irrigation of landscaped areas will be limited to between 8 p.m. and 9 a.m.

Customers are mandated to limit outdoor water use by participating in the watering schedule for outdoor water use that went into effect August 1, 2023, said the City.

According to the schedule, irrigation system use and filling swimming pools is limited to street addresses ending in even numbers on Sundays and Thursdays, and addresses ending in odd numbers on Saturdays and Wednesdays.

The City said outdoor water use is prohibited between the hours of 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. except with the use of hand-held hoses equipped with a positive pistol grip nozzle or other device that shuts off water flow when not in use, or hand-held buckets.

Those with questions can contact the City of Harker Heights Public Works Department at 254-953-5649.

The City said no boil water notice is needed at this time.
