The toddler was shot and killed Monday evening during a family picnic, according to the Justice of the Peace.

TEMPLE, Texas — A Bell County Justice of the Peace confirmed Wednesday that a child just over one year old was shot and killed at a Temple playground around 6:57 p.m. on Monday, March 11.

The incident is still under investigation, but the Justice of the Peace said the family was out for a picnic near the playground at Charter Oak Elementary School and the child was shot on school property.

The Justice of the Peace said when police arrived, they found the child with a gunshot wound. The child was transported to the hospital where they later died.

Further details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting and what occurred have not been made public by the Temple Police Department.

6 News has submitted an open records request for the police report of the incident. Temple Police are asking neighboring homes in the area to check for video or doorbell camera footage from around that time.

The Justice of the Peace said the child's body was being sent to the Dallas Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
