'It's been a nightmare' | Residents relieved to see construction resume at Heidenheimer bridge

A new contractor reportedly took over the bridge work project on FM 436 after years of delays.

HEIDENHEIMER, Texas — Residents in Heidenheimer are cautiously optimistic after seeing construction crews return to work on the bridge project at FM 436, which has suffered years of delays.

Our 6 Fix team was alerted to the issue in December 2023, when work on the bridge project was halted and residents couldn't get answers.

During a 6 News follow-up report, TxDOT said it had been working with the contractor's bonding company to ensure work on the project was completed. A new contractor was reportedly acquired for the project and work was scheduled to begin April 1.

6 News returned to the construction site on April 1 and the new contractor was mobilizing equipment and surveying the site so construction could resume.

It was something nearby residents were relieved to see.

"I'm glad to see the work finally getting done because it's been a nightmare for everyone who lives down here," said Heidenheimer resident Eddie Cook. "We have to go the long way around when we need to go somewhere. I'm just thankful that we're getting something done."

According to TxDOT, the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.

The project will reportedly include rail upgrades and culvert replacement/widenings along FM 436.
