Baylor Scott & White Health breaks ground on new sports and orthopedic center

The Baylor Scott & White Southwest Sports Medicine & Orthopedics is set to open in 2019, the press release said. Founder Dr. Jon Ellis said the practice's focus is to build strong relationships with active patients of any athletic level.

WACO, Texas — Baylor Scott & White Health broke ground Thursday on a new sports and orthopedic center that will focus on advancing sports medicine and injury prevention, spokesperson Megan Snipes said in a press release.

The 106,000-square-foot, four-story facility is scheduled to open in 2019, the release said.

The release said the whole community will have access to equipment and services elite athletes use at the facility.

“Today’s groundbreaking represents our commitment to promoting wellness in this community and our continued work with athletes of all ages,” Baylor Scott & White Health Waco president Glenn Robinson said. “With this new addition to our campus, we seek to prevent injuries before they occur with advanced performance practices and prevention technology. When injuries do strike, we stand ready to treat patients with a team approach to each individual’s unique injury.”

The same team of physicians that care for Baylor athletes will work with junior colleges and high schools throughout Central Texas to bring thorough sports medicine treatment, the release said.

“We focus on building relationships with primary care physicians, athletic trainers and coaches,” the founder of the new practice, Dr. Jon Ellis, said. “We work with them to provide quality sports medicine, and our work together will be expanded in this new facility. We are excited to continue keeping this community healthy.”

Snipes said these are the highlights of the sports and orthopedic center:

  • Primary care and preventive medicine
  • Sports performance space where professionals can help athletes of all ages with strength and conditioning while focusing on safety
  • Specialists offering surgical and nonsurgical solutions for pain in the spine, joints, hand, wrist, elbow, foot and ankle
  • Advanced radiology technology to diagnose patients
  • A surgery center located in the same complex as medical practices and rehabilitation services
  • Physical rehabilitation with indoor and outdoor therapy areas

Additionally, the Fusionetics Performance Health System is a sports science clinical program that will focus on decreasing injury, hone performance and speedy recovery, the release said.
