Fort Hood troops arrive to border support mission

Soldiers from the 36th Engineer Brigade and the First Calvary Division arrived to southwest border last week to provide additional support.

FORT HOOD, Texas — Troops from the 36th Engineer Brigade and the First Calvary Division are among the thousands of military personnel who have arrived to help with the border security mission along the southwest border.

Northern Command Spokesperson Michael McCullough said the troops are not necessarily watching the border directly but instead are making sure border control has everything it needs.

The soldiers arrived last week to help with mission objectives like security at temporary posts, reinforcing roads coming into the U.S. with temporary vehicle barriers, and providing logistics support to help troops move around or set up essentials like dining halls and showers.

The mission comes after the Department of Homeland Security requested additional border security assistance from the Department of Defense.

Officials estimated over 7,000 troops from California, Arizona and Texas would be sent to assist U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
