Gov. Abbott to be joined by 14 other governors at border Sunday

Their visit comes as a convoy calling itself "God's Army" made its way to Eagle Pass on Friday.

EAGLE PASS, Texas — Governor Greg Abbott is making a stop in Eagle Pass along with 14 other governors on Sunday.

Their visit comes as a convoy calling itself "God's Army" made its way to Eagle Pass on Friday.

Saturday, the group attended a rally calling for more border security.

KENS 5's Mike Jimenez spoke to attendees and explains why a group of faith leaders are asking the governor not to visit Eagle Pass.

Organizers of Saturday's rally say they want to spread awareness to issues at the border and hope legislators hear their call to action.

"The amount of trafficking the amount of drugs coming across the border is hurting people," said Kimberly Moyers, organizer of Saturday's rally, Texas Independence Project.

Hundreds of people came out to Quemado, which is about 20 miles north of Eagle Pass, to attend a rally hosted by the Texas Independent Project.

There was some concern about potential violence at Saturday's rally but law enforcement from different agencies were there to make sure that didn't happen.

"You got a few people with some signs that we can do without but they don't seem to be violent either they are just saying their own thing I don't particularly agree with but they got the right to say what they want as long as they do it peacefully," said Tony Brock, rally attendee.

Governor Greg Abbott will be in Eagle Pass Sunday, hosting 14 Republican governors at Shelby Park.

The governors will receive a briefing on Operation Lone Star. They will then discuss president Biden's border policy.

Meanwhile, faith leaders in Eagle Pass held an emergency meeting Saturday in response to the rally.

They say they're concerned about the violent threats and chaos at the border. They're also calling on Governor Abbott to cancel plans to visit Eagle Pass.

"It's a serious concern and I ask that Governor Abbott please relent sir relent do not come do not visit our community," said Jessie Fuentes, Eagle Pass Border Coalition.

Governor Abbott will hold the press conference at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

KENS 5 will have a crew at the event and will bring you coverage throughout the day and evening.
