Mart EMT fights for her life against multiple myeloma

Some of her friends from church have started a GoFundMe to assist with medical bills.

MART, Texas — From a hospital bed at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, it's a miracle that Mart EMT Theresa Miller is even alive.

However, her husband James Miller says she's a fighter and she isn't giving up on the aggressive multiple myeloma that has Theresa in the fight of her life.

"She's a rock. She's my rock. We have about 19 grandkids that expect her to come home and be some-what normal again," James Miller said.

In the spring of 2023, Theresa Miller was giving CPR to a patient when she broke her own rib. She went to the emergency room where an MRI was ordered. A few weeks later the "rollercoaster from hell" began for the family. Doctors said it was cancer.

"It's snowballed from there. She went down to the ICU last Wednesday and I'm very surprised she is here today to talk to us," James Miller explained.

Theresa's husband is a retired first responder who used to work on the same ambulance as her. He's been by her side every step of the way.

"I've told her and I've asked God, let me be the one to do this. Let me be the one to do this suffering and let her go back to a normal life. I keep praying for a miracle," James Miller said.

Theresa now qualifies for disability, but her insurance will soon expire because she's unable to work because of the chemo, radiation and constant visits to the hospital.

"Our insurance is good for about three more months. We're on COBRA through her employer and once that's over I don't know what we're going to do then. God's got our back. He will provide. I believe that," James Miller explained.

Just one of the treatments doctors recommend will cost more than $300,000. Friends from church have started a Gofundme to help them with mounting medical bills as Theresa stays focused on beating cancer.
