From Waco to Dallas in minutes? Proposed high-speed 'Hyperloop' could make it happen

It would travel through the I-35 corridor from Dallas-Fort Worth to Waco, Temple, Killeen, Austin, San Antonio, and ultimately Laredo in just 45 minutes.

WACO, Texas — A new and faster form of transportation could be coming to Central Texas.

The proposed high-speed transportation is pretty futuristic and it could take a decade to come to life, but once it's completed it would only take about 45 minutes to travel from Dallas to Laredo.

Waco's Metropolitan Planning Organization Director Chris Evilia said they are looking into a fast rail called Hyperloop.

It would travel through the I-35 corridor from Dallas-Fort Worth to Waco, Temple, Killeen, Austin, San Antonio, and ultimately Laredo in just 45 minutes.

Evilia said with all the growth in Texas, this new form of transportation is essential.

"It's another transportation option. One of the things we are seeing is at the Texas triangle is probably going to have twice as many people than it has right now probably in another 25 years or so," Evilia said.

Evilia said all cities involved are on the same page and hope to move forward with the project. They partnered with a consultant to determine the next steps in making the high-speed rail a reality.

"It's to make sure this region remains economically competitive. That we can get people from point A to point B in a reasonable amount of time, quickly, efficiently and safely," Evilia said.

The consultant will share their findings and recommendations about technology, station locations, cost, and what they need to move forward at a public MPO meeting at the South Waco Community Center on Thursday at 2 p.m.
