Take an inside look at Belton ISD's newest school

Charter Oak Elementary School is set to open in Fall 2019.

BELTON, Texas — Charter Oak Elementary School is set to open in Fall 2019 to help address massive growth within the Belton Independent School District.

The school will be the first to open from the ISD's 2017 $150 million bond, and school board officials passed the attendance boundaries for it Monday night.

The school is nestled in southwest Temple, near the Leon River, and officials said it will be able to serve up to 800 students, the standard for elementary schools, once it's completed.

"It's centrally located within the school district," Superintendent Susan Kincannon said. "It allowed for us to redraw attendance boundaries without making drastic changes."

The total construction cost for the school is about $16.8 million.

A representative from O'Connel Robertson Architecture said one feature of the new campus is "grade level neighborhoods."

These neighborhoods would group six classrooms of the same grade level together. The individual neighborhoods are separated by doors with locks.

An architect said they chose the spot for the school because of neighborhoods popping up alongside the school in the Temple and Belton areas.

"This site was ultimately the best opportunity in construction and cost," Jarrod Sterzinger said. "Then the surrounding neighborhood and where growth is within the district. We evaluated the sites on multiple categories and ultimately were able to offer this as that biggest impact to affect the school district."
