Vehicle drives through doors and into Killeen mall, shutting it down Sunday

Some department stores may remain open.

The Killeen Mall was abruptly closed Sunday morning after a driver plowed through the building around 2 a.m.

Killeen police said their preliminary investigation suggested a man was speeding south on Becker Avenue in a silver Nissan Altima when he tried to turn west onto Illinois Avenue and left the road -- striking a landscape fixture and continuing to drive across the mall parking lot. The driver eventually crashed through the north doors -- just west of Burlington Coat Factory -- and drove into the mall, where police said he struck furniture and kiosks before the vehicle came to a stop.

Killeen Police Spokesperson Ofelia Miramontez said the driver -- whose name was not released -- was found and taken to Metroplex Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Miramontez said the crash was still under investigation early Sunday afternoon. And, police did not release any information about possible charges.

According to the mall, some department stores may be open Sunday -- while the rest of the building will remain closed through, at least, the rest of the day.
