After 2 years of construction, all lanes of I-35 open in Waco, Bellmead

Even so, TxDOT contractors will still have work to do on the frontage road and the intersections. That roadwork isn't expected to be complete until end of year.

WACO, Texas — Exciting news for Waco-area drivers. All lanes of Interstate 35 passing through Central Waco and Bellmead will officially be open Wednesday.

Construction for Project 4B started at least two years ago. It started at 12th Street in Waco and went through Bellmead to North Loop 340. For at least two years, it caused lots of traffic and delays for many.

"It has almost become a way of life, dealing with the construction on 35," said resident Andrea Hix. "Definitely a dream come true to have four lanes open."

Though the main lanes were open on Tuesday, TxDOT had to shut them back down Tuesday night in order to put up some final signage. When it opens Wednesday, the lanes will be open for good, a spokesperson told 6 News.

Even so, TxDOT contractors will still have work to do on the frontage road and the intersections. That roadwork isn't expected to be complete until the end of the year.
