Travis County deputy struck by 18-wheeler

The deputy was pinned beneath one of the 18-wheeler's tractor tires, the Travis County Sheriff's Office said.

TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — A deputy with the Travis County Sheriff's Office had to undergo surgery after he was struck by an 18-wheeler, according to the sheriff's office.

According to the Travis County Sheriff's Office, the accident happened before 9 a.m. in the 9300 block of State Highway 130 going northbound.

The deputy pulled over and got out of his vehicle to assist a driver of an 18-wheeler who had gone off the roadway, TCSO said. While helping the driver, another 18-wheeler slid on the icy roadway and struck the deputy, which pinned them beneath one of its tractor tires, TCSO said.

Authorities were able to get the deputy unpinned a little after 9:30 a.m. The deputy was then taken to the hospital for surgery. The deputy is expected to survive.

“I want to offer my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who responded and assisted this deputy in his time of dire need," said TCSO Sheriff Sally Hernandez. Both his biological and TCSO family are relieved and thankful that he’s alive. Please, please don’t drive on these icy roadways. It’s not worth your life or the lives of the first responders who are literally putting their personal safety on the line.”

The identity of the deputy will not be released, TCSO said.
