WACO, Texas — On Saturday, Feb. 24, the Waco Police Department and Waco Fire Department met on the court at University High School for an unforgettable showdown.
The two teams of first responders faced off in the first-ever Guns & Hoses Charity Basketball Game alongside athletes from Area 12 Special Olympics Texas teams, representing the people the event was for.
The friendly matchup was all to raise money for Special Olympics Texas. While admission to the game was free for attendees, both teams collected donations at the event, all proceeds of which will go directly towards supporting local Special Olympics teams and athletes.
Though the scoreboard showed a 46-29 victory for the Waco Fire Department as the final buzzer sounded, the City of Waco said the true winners of the game are the Special Olympics athletes who will benefit from the donations.
The City of Waco thanked the community for their generosity, which they say will leave a "lasting impact" on the lives of the Special Olympic athletes.
Special Olympics Texas is broken up into 22 areas across the Lone Star State. Waco is in Area 12 - Heart of Texas.
