Suspect who shot and killed 17-year-old in Killeen thought the safety was on

The incident occurred on Christmas Day and it was originally being investigated as a murder.

KILLEEN, Texas — An arrest affidavit released by the Killeen Police Department revealed new details on a Christmas Day shooting that left a 17 year old dead.

According to the affidavit, on Dec. 25, 2023, officers responded to the 1400 block of North College Street around 2:52 p.m. to the report of a victim who had been shot.

Police say the victim was found dead at the scene with an apparent gunshot wound that went through his arm and into his upper left chest.

According to the affidavit, the victim's brother, 20-year-old Jeremiah Lafredrick Matthews, was contacted by police after he was identified as the suspect.

Matthews was taken to the Killeen Police Department where he agreed to make a statement.

The affidavit states that Matthews admitted to handling his gun while pointing it at his brother. Matthews says he then squeezed the trigger thinking the safety was on, but it was not as a round hit his brother and killed him.

Killeen PD says Matthews was arraigned on Wednesday, Dec. 27 after being charged with manslaughter and he is reportedly being held at the Bell County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
