6 Fix | Killeen man says driveway repaving job was left unfinished after paying $12,000

Lawrence Demps said Central Texas Asphalt laid down the gravel on his driveway before abandoning the job and cutting off communication.

KILLEEN, Texas — Killeen resident Lawrence Demps said Central Texas Asphalt and Chip Seal approached him about repaving his driveway in November and offered their services, but after paying them in cash, Demps says he was out $12,300 and his driveway remains unfinished.

After the initial gravel was laid on his long-winding driveway, Demps said he spoke with Martin McDonald about coming back out and finishing the job.

"I called him, I texted him, no answer," Demps said.  "I gave my wife the number and then they answered because it was a new number and then I called him and he got irritated. I just wanted to know if this was legit."

From there, Demps said "The rest is history" after his driveway was left "a quarter" complete.

"You can see the sand, the chips, that's all I got are a bunch of chips," Demps said. "You go down the road and it disappears, you see the old road I had for years."

Demps said riding down his driveway, it's littered with "black spots" that stood out after rain washed some of the gravel away.

Between texts and calls, Demps said he's tried to contact Central Texas Asphalt about ten times, but if the job remains unfinished, Demps said he wants his money back.

"Put down the chips and tar, smooth it, roll it, press it and then come back and sweep," Demps said.  "All this gravel shouldn't be sticking up like this."

Demps said while he's avoided damage to his vehicle on the loose gravel, the experience has been "frustrating."

"You get that noise hitting your vehicle and I'm just thinking of the money I paid for this, and I just feel like a fool," Demps said.

Demps said he had not read the six complaints to date of "problems with product/service" that were submitted about Central Texas Asphalt & Chip Seal prior to hiring them for the job.

With no response from Central Texas Asphalt & Chip Seal to 6 News's request for comment or explanation of the abandoned job, Demps said he plans to take them to small claims court.  Their website has also been taken offline.
