Rockdale ISD adopts 4-day school week for 2023-2024 school year

Rockdale ISD's superintendent said she believes it will improve teacher retention, as well as improve student achievement.

ROCKDALE, Texas — Rockdale ISD will be switching to a four-day school weeks starting in the 2023-2024 school year.

A Tuesday news release said the switch was developed with the input of parents, teachers and community members.

"[It] is designed to improve student achievement and enhance teacher retention," the district said in the release.

According to the new calendar, students can expect to attend school for four days a week "most weeks" from Monday through Thursdays, the district said.

Teachers will use Fridays for planning, as well as allow family time.

"By shifting to a four-day week, we will be able to provide more focused instruction for our students and give our teachers more time to plan and collaborate," said Superintendent Denise Monzingo. "We also believe that this change will improve teacher retention and recruitment by providing a better work-life balance and allowing them to recharge and come back to school refreshed and energized."
